Does Your Story Make YOU Cry?

Sentimental.

Untold-Story

Something that most who know me will say I have none of. But, I get emotional when I do an exercise in my training and coaching when I ask people to tell me their story.

Most people are uncomfortable with their own story. They avoid it. They dodge the details. And, most of all, they run from the emotions of it.

It is the ONE thing that separates you from everyone on this planet of 6 billion. No one’s story matches yours. And yet, over and over, in our quest to generate revenue, most sales training never approaches it.

Can you imagine that? The very thing that does that thing we are so hopeful of – differentiation – we ignore.

It’s Time For You To Find The Vein of Gold

As you’re working on your story – and I really hope you are – here’s a tip: When you get to the point where your own story makes you emotional, STOP. RIGHT THERE. In that moment of the tear welling up, recognize that you’ve hit the vein of gold. Pay-dirt.

Most of us avoid that very moment. It’s like we feel it coming and we run like madmen…AWAY from it. I challenge you to run TOWARD it. Ask yourself the question: What is there about that moment that touches me?

For in the answer to that question, arises your true purpose on this planet. The courage to share that moment with others (who have likely experienced something similar) is generous.

Defining Moments

We have all had defining moments in our lives. And most of the time, that moment comes NOT when we’re at the top of the mountain, celebrating a victory. It comes, instead, when we think back to that time we almost quit. That moment where we began to doubt our true worth, our cause, our ability. That is where your story begins. Don’t let it end when your own story causes you to cry. Start it there.

What About You?

Do you have some defining moments in your life that qualify for the ‘beginning of your story?’ You do, you just may not know it. Look deep and dig the well. The payoff is there, and it’s found in that place where your story brings out YOUR emotion.
